Self-Injury Outreach & Support

Self-injury occurs when individuals purposely hurt their own bodies without wanting to die. It has become a major mental health concern across the world with up to one in five youth and young adults reporting self-injury.

PROJECT OVERVIEW

Launched in 2012, Self-injury Outreach& Support (SiOS) is the first international non-profit outreach organization providing current information and helpful resources about self-injury to individuals who self-injure, those who have recovered, as well as their caregivers and families, friends, teachers and the health professionals who work with them. SiOS was co-founded and is co-directed by Dr. Stephen Lewis (University of Guelph) and Dr. Nancy Heath (McGill University).

This crowdfunding project will provide the necessary financial support to fund the development of a SiOS App for use on mobile devices, which will help to provide resources primarily for those who self-injure. The phases of this project will be taking place from March 2016 to October 2016.

GOALS

The Self-Injury Outreach and Support project is attempting to raise $5000 to put towards the creation of resources to provide individuals who self-injure with recovery-oriented stories and materials including the development of a mobile app which will provide an interactive platform to access these resources. Our team’s research has demonstrated that the Internet is highly relevant to those who self-injure and that a mobile app may have strong potential to help those who currently struggle.
