U of G Leadership votes to remove Cannon
|
After receiving numerous complaints from area residents who have been woken at night, the U of G leadership has voted to remove Old Jeremiah. The popular Cannon is painted under cover of night by U of G students, however, it has been going off recently at unpredictable times of the day – and night. The loud booming explosions reach nearby neighbourhoods, and of course, will be problematic for students in residence once the pandemic ends. Beyond the noise, there have been obvious concerns for student safety, as well as for the administrators in the University Centre at whom the Cannon is aimed. The proceeds from the sale of the historic landmark will be set aside for the paving of Johnston Green, planned for 2024.

Happy April Fool’s Day! Don't worry, Old Jeremiah isn’t going anywhere.

We could all use a little more fun these days, and we hope this put a smile on your face.
Painting the Cannon is almost a rite of passage, and these student traditions are part of what makes the U of G experience. If you reflect on your best U of G memories, chances are they happened outside the lecture halls.
We’re doing our best to make the online experience great but this cohort of students is really missing campus and residence life. Student Affairs is working hard to offer fun alternatives, and is eager to keep the tradition of extra-curricular involvement going strong.
You can help make that possible. Please consider donating the equivalent of a can of spray paint, $5 a month, to Student Affairs Highest Priority. Your donation is eligible for a tax receipt, unlike spray paint!
Wishing you a healthy dose of skepticism today – Happy April Fool’s Day!
