Jim Atkinson Tribute Page

  Brian Cluff Traynor

Dr. James Atkinson, longtime Rugby Coach and faculty member at the University of Guelph, passed away on Monday, July 3, 2023. He was 76.

Jim’s career at Guelph spanned over 40 years. He came to Guelph in 1970 with his wife, Susan, to do his PhD, playing rugby with the Guelph Gryphons for four years as a graduate student. When he began teaching in the Animal Nutrition Department of the College of Biological Sciences, he also took over coaching the team. He later moved to the Department of Animal and Poultry Science in the Ontario Agricultural College.

Over the years, Jim’s contributions to campus were numerous. He was the College Royal advisor for 30 years, supporting one of the University’s largest and most publicized annual events. He also co-chaired the campus-wide United Way campaign from 2007 to 2010. In 2004, Jim received the Excellence in Undergraduate Academic Advising Medallion for his outstanding contribution in advising students at the undergraduate level.

Jim was also known widely for his significant contributions to Guelph’s rugby program. He began coaching in the early 1970’s and spent 23 years with the men’s side. He was instrumental in establishing Guelph’s women’s program which he subsequently coached for 11 years (1996-97 to 2006-07). Jim established the team as one of the most decorated teams in Canadian University Sport history.

He was inducted to the Gryphon Athletics Hall of Fame in 1994 as a builder for his coaching contributions to the Department of Athletics. Jim was also recognized by Canadian Interuniversity Sport to celebrate his contribution to women’s sport. The Jim Atkinson Award is given annually to the Women’s Rugby Coach of the Year.

In 2015, to honour Jim’s dedication, commitment and impact on the rugby community, alumni, family, and friends established an endowed fund in Jim’s name. The Dr. James Atkinson Award recognizes Jim’s legacy and the impact that he had on so many. Each year, the award supports a student-athlete on each of the men’s and women’s Gryphon Rugby teams. You may donate to the fund by following the donate button above.

Jim and Susan were closely associated with Wild Ontario. You may make a gift in Jim’s name to support that organization by following the donate button above.
