Tribute Giving

Kennit MorrisonKenneth Bruce Morrison, B.A., Manager of The University of Guelph Bookstore, died on April 18, 2024, in his 58th year. Campus flags were lowered to half-mast on May 7 in Ken’s honour.

Born in Montreal, Ken was the youngest of seven brothers and sisters. His brother, Ian, recalls: Ken’s love of reading started at an early age, following in the footsteps of our parents, Betty and Lloyd. Growing up in Guelph, we shared a room and spent hours together talking about science fiction and the fantasy novels Ken devoured. In his university years, Ken entered the world of Dungeons and Dragons and became an avid and highly proficient online gamer. He also took a keen interest in the Morrison family ancestry and researched his Scottish heritage.

Ken earned his undergraduate degree in History from the University of Guelph – a versatile program where students work with top historians and researchers. History graduates from Guelph are known for their adaptable skills, clear judgment, and versatility, pursuing careers in business, law, education, civil service, journalism, and the arts.

Ken was employed in a variety of roles at the University. He also proudly served for four years as a member of the university’s Board of Governors, alongside the (then) Chancellor, former Lt. Gov. Lincoln Alexander.

His promotion in 2003 to Manager at The University Bookstore, a position he enjoyed for more than 20 years, allowed him to make a significant impact. Ken actively engaged with students, faculty, co-workers, and other members of the campus community. By seeking input and creating a positive rapport, he contributed to a better bookstore experience.

With Ken’s leadership, the bookstore evolved to meet the needs of a diverse and growing student population. He helped students save money by implementing a program to buy back used textbooks – an initiative in which he took great pride. At the start of each semester, his strategic planning ensured efficient staffing and minimized wait times. Ken’s anticipation of industry changes, such as the rise of e-books, led to revamping the bookstore’s website for digital delivery. As a member of the Department of Hospitality Services, he succeeded in providing excellent, cost-effective service to the campus community.

Ken’s journey exemplifies adaptability, leadership, and a dedication to enhancing the university student experience. Ken is remembered fondly for his lifelong enthusiasm for books, gaming, history, travel, and lively discussion.

In Ken’s honour, his family, friends, and colleagues have established the annual Kenneth B. Morrison Memorial Scottish Studies Travel Grant. This $1,000 grant supports registered M.A. or PhD. students at the University of Guelph who will be traveling to Scotland for research purposes.

Our goal is $32,000, which will allow us to create the grant and for it to be awarded in perpetuity. Any and all donations are welcome and appreciated.
